Eggs that are contaminated with bacteria have the following characteristics.

    1. Eggs have a weak and broken shell.
    2. Eggs have a foul smell.
    3. The color of the egg fluid turns into brownish tinge color.
    4. Eggs have not differentiated egg albumin and egg yolk. The egg yolk is mixed with the egg white.

Bacteria may enter into the egg either by the mother hen or the environment. Environment contaminated with fecal material is responsible for the contamination of eggs with bacteria. In this method, there is no mother hen involvement, and the egg is contaminated by the environment. Bacteria penetrate into the eggshell and get a chance to enter into the eggs. The egg with either weak or break eggshell is more prone to contamination with bacteria.

The mother hen is responsible for the entry of salmonella into eggs. Mother hen gets the infection from the environment. Contaminated feces transmit the bacteria into a healthy hen. Bacteria cause the reproductive tract infection of the layers. If hen ovaries are infected by salmonella, bacteria get a chance to enter into the eggs.  Ovaries transmit bacteria into the egg.
