As the name suggests, iron bacteria use iron as a source of energy to carry out their life processes. They can naturally be present in both surface water and soil. Iron bacteria are likely to enter well by the introduction of surface water and soil during drilling, pumping, etc. They can fuse oxygen with iron, manganese, or other nutrients in the water to form a slime that deposits on the well screens, pipes, and plumbing fixtures. Since iron is amongst the most abundant elements in the earth’s crust, it is found in large quantities in water reservoirs.
