Salmonella was first discovered by an American veterinary scientist named Daniel E. Salmon in 1885. He was working at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) at the time, where he isolated the bacterium from the intestines of pigs. Later, another scientist named Theobald Smith joined Salmon in his research, and together they further studied and characterized this bacterium. Their work laid the foundation for our understanding of Salmonella and its role in causing diseases in both animals and humans.
