E. coli, short for Escherichia coli, is commonly spread from person to person through what we call the fecal-oral route. This means that the bacteria are present in the feces of an infected person and can be transferred to another person if proper hygiene practices are not followed.
For example, if someone who has E. coli doesn’t wash their hands properly after using the bathroom, the bacteria can be transferred from their hands to objects they touch, such as doorknobs, utensils, or food. If another person touches these contaminated objects and then touches their mouth, they can ingest the bacteria and become infected.
Additionally, E. coli can also be spread through contaminated food or water, particularly if it’s not properly cooked or handled. So, it’s crucial to practice good hygiene, cook food thoroughly, and drink clean water to reduce the risk of spreading E. coli infections.
