Salmonella typhimurium is a gram-negative bacterium. This means that its cell wall structure does not retain the purple stain used in Gram staining, appearing pink when viewed under a microscope. Gram-negative bacteria have a thinner layer of peptidoglycan in their cell wall compared to gram-positive bacteria and possess an outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharides.
