gram positive and gram negative bacteria are differentiated on basis of their cell wall through Gram’s staining:
gram positive bacteria have single layered smooth cell wall, thickness of cell wall is 20 to 80nm, contain thick layer of peptidoglycan, have teichoic acid in cell wall, lack lipopolysaccharide, have low lipid content and are susceptible to antibiotics
gram negative bacteria have double layered wavy cell wall, thickness of cell wall is 8 to 10nm, contain thin layer of peptidoglycan, lack teichoic acid, have LPS, contain higher lipid content and are resistant to antibiotics
