E.coli spreads through oral-fecal route. Washing vegetables and fruit with fecal contaminated water can be source of transfer of e.coli in food. Not proper washing of hands after using bathroom and cooking with contaminated hands can also pass e.coli to food. Keeping vegetables like salad stuff near raw meat or meat products can also contaminate these vegetables with e.coli.
