Salmonella uses a special system to take in oxygen, much like we breathe in air. This process happens inside the bacteria’s tiny structures called mitochondria. Once Salmonella gets hold of oxygen, it reacts with food the bacteria eats, breaking it down into smaller pieces. This reaction releases energy that Salmonella uses to perform all its activities, grow, and reproduce.
So, just like we need to eat food to get energy, Salmonella needs oxygen and food to produce the energy it requires to survive and thrive.
