Healthy unbroken skin is a pretty good barrier, so simply letting water that contains E. coli run over your body is not likely to cause infection by itself.

The bigger risk comes from accidentally swallowing the water or getting it into your eyes, nose, or any cuts, because that gives the bacteria a direct path into the body.

If the contamination level is high or you have a weakened immune system it is safer to avoid showering until the supply is treated or to use boiled then cooled water for personal hygiene.

At minimum keep your mouth closed, don’t shave or brush teeth in the shower, and cover any open wounds with a waterproof bandage until the water tests negative for coliforms.
