    chlorine can kill most of the bacteria like E.coli 0157:H7 if its concentration and pH is maintained according to CDC (centers for disease control and prevention). it is used as disinfectant in swimming pool, drinking water and wastewater. but some microorganisms like Hepatitis A virus are resistant to chlorine.
