detergents have high pH (alkaline) and bacteria cannot survive this pH condition. they can also cause lysis of bacterial cells. hence they are helpful in killing microbes. they also contain surfactant that can remove dirt and particles from clothes. it is recommended to wash clothes in hot water with detergent as both high temperature and alkaline pH are helpful in killing microbes.
