Most bacteria reproduce asexually by binary fission. In this process, a single cell bacterium divides into two identical daughter cells. Binary fission starts when the DNA of the bacterium duplicates, then cell elongation occurs and then the elongated cell splits into two identical daughter cells.
Other less common asexual modes are reproduction through conidia, through cyst formation, through endospore formation and budding.
Bacteria also reproduce sexually through transformation, transduction and conjugation. Genetic recombination is observed in sexual modes of transmission.
