Salmonella was first discovered by an American veterinarian named Dr. Daniel E. Salmon in the late 19th century. In 1885, Dr. Salmon identified a bacterium that was causing a widespread disease outbreak among pigs in the United States. He successfully isolated and characterized the bacterium, which he named Salmonella choleraesuis. Later, in 1906, Dr. Theobald Smith, a microbiologist working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, further studied and classified the Salmonella genus. Since then, numerous Salmonella species have been identified, many of which can cause illness in humans and animals. Dr. Salmon’s and Dr. Smith’s groundbreaking work laid the foundation for understanding Salmonella infections and the development of measures to prevent and control them.
