mostly bacteria divide by binary fission: in this process bacterial cell divides into two identical daughter cells. the bacterial DNA divides and cell starts to elongate resulting in splitting of single bacterial cell into two cells. this is the asexual mode of reproduction.
bacteria also reproduce sexually by transferring their DNA directly from one bacterial cell to another. this is the horizontal transfer of genetic material and the process is known as conjugation. bacteria use their structures known as Pilli for conjugation.
