bacteria survive harsh conditions by forming spores or endospores. these are non-reproductive structures that are resistant to temperature ( either boiling or freezing), pH, lack of nutrition and radiations. endospores cannot divide but can survive harsh conditions for several years. when favorable conditions appear these spores convert into vegetative form and bacteria can divide normally.
