Norovirus paranoia
Question
Is the risk of norovirus generally high at restaurants?
I have aspbergers and recently developed this crippling fear of restaurants due to shared plates. I just need to know if it’s a logical fear or not

Short answer
For most people the chance of catching norovirus from a restaurant meal is low, but it is never zero.
Why restaurants are not the main source
Outbreak data shows most norovirus cases start at home, in day care centres or on cruise ships, not in regular restaurants. Modern food safety code require sick employees to stay home and managers to watch handwashing and surface cleaning.
When risk goes up
Buffets, shared utensils and salad bars can spread the virus if a guest touch food after touching their mouth. Also, a food handler that come back to work within 48 hours of vomiting can still shed virus.
Practical steps
Pick places with good hygiene grades, eat hot food while its hot, skip self service buffets if you feel anxious and always wash your hands before eating. Those simple habits cut the odds by a lot.
Bottom line
Your fear is understandable, but statistically the risk is small and manageable. Focusing on basic hygiene instead of total avoidance usually works better and lets you enjoy eating out again.
Hope that helps.
