Escherichia coli, often abbreviated as E. coli, is classified as a Gram-negative bacterium due to the composition of its cell wall. This outer membrane contains lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which contribute to the characteristic features of Gram-negative bacteria. When subjected to the Gram staining procedure, the cell wall of E. coli does not retain the crystal violet dye and appears pink or red when counterstained with safranin, indicating its Gram-negative nature.
