Salmonella infection usually spreads by eating contaminated food, not by breathing the same air.

Still it can move from one person to another if the infected person shed the bacteria in their stool and someone else swallow even tiny traces, for example through unwashed hands after using the toilet or when changing diapers.

So the route is fecal oral, the same as many other gut bugs. Good hand washing and proper bathroom hygiene breaks the chain.

Kissing or hugging do not pass Salmonella unless there is accidental fecal contamination. People are normally considered non infectious after symptoms stop and two negative stool cultures, though a small number become long term carriers.
